FAQ
What is a desktop equipment appraisal?
A desktop equipment appraisal is a professional, USPAP-compliant valuation of machinery or equipment completed remotely, without the appraiser physically visiting the site, using client-provided documentation, photos, and specifications instead.
Rather than scheduling an on-site visit, our appraisers analyze the information you supply, including asset lists, make and model details, serial numbers, condition notes, operating hours, and photographs, to determine fair market value (or another applicable standard of value) as of a specific date. The process follows the same recognized valuation methodologies used in on-site work: the market approach (comparable sales), the cost approach (replacement cost minus depreciation), and where applicable, the income approach. Because no physical inspection occurs, the resulting report clearly discloses that condition and asset details are based on client-provided data.
Desktop equipment appraisals from Ironclad Desktop Valuations are suitable for a wide range of purposes:
- Financing and asset-based lending decisions
- Insurance coverage reviews and claims support
- IRS tax compliance, estate matters, and charitable donations
- Buy/sell transactions, mergers, and purchase price allocation
- Litigation, bankruptcy, and restructuring matters
Compared to an on-site engagement, a desktop appraisal typically carries a lower cost and a faster turnaround, making it practical when timing is short, travel is impractical, or the scope does not require physical verification.
